Big Island Beekeepers Association

LOGO + BRANDING

Hilo, Hawaii

The Big Island Beekeepers Association (BIBA) is the largest organization of beekeepers and honey producers on Hawaii island. In 2017 their president came to me to create the first true logo for the organization. Previously they were using a honeybee photograph as their default image.

Logo

For the BIBA logo, we wanted the logo to be rather straightforward. That is to say, we wanted it to say “Big Island”, and we wanted it to say “beekeeping”, as well as give an impression to the concept of a network (i.e. “association”).

Grid

I formed the geometry for the underlying grid based on the hexagon, deconstructing the honeycomb to create a foundational system that would allow for a bit more complex forms, while adhering to a structure that would provide visual harmony and a sense of order.

More liberty was given in the structure of the bee, as it is the more organic or natural element, or subject, while the island and the inner lines of the wings represents the system of the association itself.

Compare the two images below to see the grid and how the logo has been drawn from it.

Banner

In November 2019 the Big Island Beekeepers Association celebrated the 10th Annual Hawaiian Natural Honey Challenge, sampling 117 submissions of local honey and receiving 949 people’s choice votes.

I created a banner for them to welcome their participants to the event.
